What is Functional Psychiatry?
Generally, functional medicine is an individualized treatment approach which focuses on balancing one’s biology by treating the underlying causes of illness. Functional psychiatry, then, is a whole-body approach to treating psychiatric conditions which identifies the root causes of mental illness to treat and restore health.
How does Functional Psychiatry compare to Conventional Psychiatry?
In conventional psychiatry, providers use pharmaceutical drugs to reduce the symptoms of mental illness. This approach assumes an underlying neurotransmitter imbalance. However, there are many more factors that influencing mental health other than neurotransmitters alone. On the other hand, functional psychiatry treats any underlying imbalances that cause symptoms. In addressing and resolving these imbalances, patients often find remission in symptoms and are more likely to find lasting recovery.
Why use Functional Psychiatry?
The root causes of mental illness are unique to each patient. They may be biochemical, hormonal, genetic, nutritional, or environmental. Through laboratory testing and informed treatment of deficiencies and imbalances, functional psychiatry can help patients achieve long-term healing. Functional psychiatry provides a way to treat psychiatric conditions by caring for the whole-person, not just their symptoms.
